ABOUT THE MOVEMENT IN OUR PARISH
The motto of the Movement is a ‘Family for All’. It provides opportunities for individuals and families to belong to a small Christian community who gather regularly for various activities and opportunities for fellowship and support. As the members in each Family Group get to know one another, they can offer practical Christian care and support, in good times and challenging times. Our Parish Family Groups seek to live the truth of our faith, hope and love of God in ordinary everyday ways.
The Passionist Family Group Movement (PFGM) was founded by Fr Peter McGrath CP in 1972 in the (then) small parish of Terry Hills in Sydney, Australia. This small parish, gradually grew, and with it so did the Family Groups. The spread of the PFGM around Australia under the direction of the Passionists began slowly in 1982. By early 1992 they had spread to over 180 parishes in Australia. Today Passionist Family Groups can be found throughout Australia, New Zealand, U.S.A, U.K., Ireland and Scotland. In Queensland there are 24 parishes with Family Groups and in the Brisbane Archdiocese alone there are 17 parishes with active Family Groups, and we are one of those.
Within the context of our Parish the Passionist Family Group Movement fulfils our Vision and Mission by acknowledging our parish as a “family of diverse communities”, with different but complementary gifts, needs, and opportunities.
Family Groups assist us to “walk with” each other in the ways of Jesus Christ. At the heart of Passionist Family Groups is the mission of our parish to be a people who support and connect with each other, who seek to serve, and to grow as Disciples.
The Passionist Family Group Movement aims to build Christian community through the development of extended families. With loneliness and isolation so prevalent in our society, there is a genuine need for people to know and support each other. Family Groups create an extended family atmosphere within the community and are open to everyone. Our focus is on people caring for, loving and accepting each other. Everyone is welcome to join. It does not matter what stage of life you are in, Family Groups are for single people, married and unmarried couples, families with children, widowed or divorced people, for young adults and seniors alike.
